When you have sweeping views and a home that needs more living space, the answer isn’t always moving – sometimes it’s building the room you wish you had. This home addition in Fond du Lac proves that the right expansion can completely change how you experience your home.
The Challenge: Limited Living Space, Unlimited Views
This single-story ranch sat on a beautiful lakeside property with panoramic views, but the original floor plan didn’t take full advantage of the setting. The homeowners needed more living space, and they wanted it to connect them to the landscape they loved.
Rather than close off the addition with standard walls, we designed a room that’s essentially wrapped in windows – creating a space that feels more like a sunroom while functioning as everyday living area.
A Room Built for Light and Views
The star of this addition is the window design. We installed floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides of the new space, flooding the room with natural light from sunrise to sunset. The result is a living area that changes throughout the day:
Morning light streams in from the east, perfect for coffee and watching the sunrise over the open fields.
Afternoon sun warms the space naturally, reducing heating costs and creating a comfortable gathering spot.
Evening views stretch across the landscape, providing a front-row seat to Wisconsin sunsets.
The wraparound windows don’t just provide light—they make the outdoor scenery part of the room’s design. Every season brings a different view, from spring green fields to winter snow-covered landscapes.
Seamless Integration with the Existing Home
One of the biggest challenges with any addition is making it look like it belongs. This project achieves that through careful attention to detail:
Matching Exterior Materials: We used the same gray-blue horizontal siding and roofing as the existing home. From the outside, you’d be hard-pressed to identify where the original house ends and the addition begins.
Coordinated Roofline: The addition’s roof pitch matches the main house, creating visual continuity while maintaining proper drainage and snow load capacity for Wisconsin winters.
Natural Stone Foundation: The addition sits on the same type of foundation as the original structure, maintaining consistency around the entire home’s perimeter.
Interior Flow: Inside, the addition opens naturally from the existing living areas, creating an easy flow rather than feeling like a separate attachment.
The Perfect Plant Paradise
An unexpected benefit of all those windows? The addition became the homeowners’ plant room. Dozens of houseplants thrive in the abundant natural light, creating a green, living atmosphere that enhances the connection to the outdoors.
The consistent sunlight exposure means plants that struggle in typical interior spaces flourish here. From floor plants to hanging varieties, the space supports a variety of species—turning the functional living addition into something that feels almost like an indoor greenhouse.
